👦👧幼兒為什麼要學習Sight Word❓

在初期兒童的英文教材和讀物中，Sight word大約佔了總字數的80%左右。兒童認得sight word的好處是在接觸初級的教材時，要嘗試閱讀內容前就已認得其中大部份的單字，因此兒童可以專心的在教材的內容以及理解，而不用為了要對每個字進行拼讀解碼而中斷閱讀。全字教學的提倡者認為讓學生認得大量的Sight word，有助於閱讀的學習。

語言早教專家認為識別Sight word的能力有助於剛開始學習閱讀的孩童，因為sight word中有些字的唸法不符合phonics的規則，有些字的意義也不容易用圖片來表示。例如was就不符合phonics的規則，中間的a發/ɒ~ʌ/的音，最後的s發/z/的音，因為was表達一個抽象的概念（曾經存在），也不容易用圖片表示。

如果孩子在閱讀單句前，在十個單詞中已經能讀出七、八個，其餘再利用Phonics拼讀法試着讀出，再結合讀本中所提供的圖片以及前後文，做文意之猜測和理解，那麼，基本上，孩子就踏出英語閱讀的第一步了。也就是說，在指導孩子閱讀之前，若能先帶入Sight Words，英語教學的過程就會更順利。尤其是一些特別著墨於Sight Words認識的英語讀本，更會不自覺地培養孩子的閱讀能力，也帶出孩子的閱讀樂趣。
